BlackBerry Cloud Services for Business

BlackBerry Business Cloud Services is the name given to RIM's new hosted BlackBerry Enterprise Server offering that they have partnered with Microsoft and the Office 365 platform to provide, giving a cloud-based Exchange mailbox and secure BlackBerry mobile email and PIM synchronisation with no need for any locally installed hardware or software.

Any BlackBerry Smartphone running device software 4.5 or later can be used with the service, and administration is performed entirely from the web browser.

BlackBerry Cloud Architecture

For administrators, the following features are available:

  • Authentication - administrators can log in using the same credentials used to access Microsoft Exchange Online.
  • User Account Management - manage how email messages and PIM data are synchronised for individual users or the entire organisation.
  • User Group Management - create groups to share administrative roles, IT policies and other configurations among similar user accounts. Groups can also be nested.
  • User Statistics Tracking - view user statistics, including email messages that are sent and received, pending email messages, reconciliation and last contact time with a BlackBerry device.
  • Support for personal devices - for BlackBerry device users that have both personal and work data on a device, administrators have the ability to delete only work data from the device (for example if that person leaves the organisation). This feature requires BlackBerry device software 6.0 or later.
  • Language support - the following languages are available: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Brazilian-Portuguese.

For users, the following email messaging features are available:

  • Email reconciliation - compose, read, move, reply, forward, delete messages. Message read and unread status is also synchronised.
  • Email filters - users and administrators can create and change filters, dtermining an action to apply to a message if it meets specific criteria. Actions include forward, forward with priority, or do not forward to BlackBerry device.
  • Email message forwarding - users can turn off email forwarding to their device.
  • Signatures - users can add a signature to all email messages sent from their device. Administrators can add disclaimers to all messages sent from users and groups.
  • Out of office reply - users can set their out of office message and status from their device. Users can also set an expiry date for out of office replies.
  • Contact lookup - users can search for a contact's first name, last name or both in the organisation's user directory.
  • Attachment support - users can send email messages containing attachments from their devices, up to a maximum of 3MB for an individual file, and up to a total maximum of 5MB per individual email. Administrators can reduce these limits if desired.
  • Personal distribution lists - users with devices running software 5.0 or later can view personal distribution lists in their contact lists.
  • Follow-up flag - users with devices running software 5.0 or later can flag email messages and set reminder times.
  • Calendar entry forwarding - users with devices running software 5.0 or later can forward meeting invitations and calendar entries from their devices
  • Availability of meeting invitees - users can view the availability of meeting invitees on their BlackBerry devices. Administrators can disable this feature if desired.
  • Remote search for email messages - users can search for email messages that are located on the messaging server from their device.

BlackBerry Cloud Services

The following IT policies are also available:

  • Individual liable devices - this policy prevents users from accessing organiser data from the social netowrking applications on their devices. Users are permitted to access their personal calendar services and email services (for example BIS accounts), make calls when the device is locked, and cut, copy and paste text. Users cannot forward email messages from one messaging service to another.
  • Basic password security - this policy requires a basic password that users can use to unlock their devices. Users must change the passwrod regularly. The policy also includes a password timeout that locks devices.
  • Medium password security - similar to the above policy but requires a complex password and also turns off Bluetooth technology on devices.
  • Medium security with no third party applications - similar to the above policy but also includes a maximum password history. This policy prevents users from making their devices discoverable by other Bluetooth enabled devices and prevents devices from downloading third party applications.
  • Advanced security - this policy also requires a complex password that users must change frequently, a password timeout that locks devices, and a maximum password history. This policy restricts Bluetooth technology on devices, turns on strong content protection, turns off USB mass storage, and requires devices to encrypt external file systems (storage cards).
  • Advanced security with no third party applications - similar to the advanced security policy but also prevents users from installing third party applications.
